This is top stuff, thanks!

One thing I like to do to keep battle interesting for players is move from present tense to future tense on enemies turns. So, at the start of an enemy turn, narrate what they do but! Before moving to whoever is next, narrate their intentions for their next turn eg.

Present: "Now he's narrowed the distance, the black Knight holds a palm out in front of him, silvery energy fires forth from it blasting Ardwick from afar for 6 damage"

Future: "Satisfied with his attack he turns to Bulgo, his hand moves to pull out his sword as he begins striding towards him, seemingly fixed on engaging in melee combat. Phil, it's Ardwicks turn, what do you do?"

I find it lends a sense of urgency, and gives players more scope to respond tactically to prevent attacks, or change the battlefield to thwart enemies moves.
